The case for urban innovation

City-dwellers are a powerful demographic, and their power is growing by the day. The world’s cities already represent the lion’s share of the global economy. And as urbanization rates rise and cities expand, their economic potential can only increase.

At the same time, rapid population growth puts greater pressure on urban ecosystems. Each city is its own microcosm with unique desires and needs. To help guide them into the future, businesses will need to deploy tailor-made urban innovations.

Catching the urban wave

Cities have a unique magnetism. Something about them speaks to our imagination. Their potential is almost electrifying, like a feeling in the air. And with good reason: as of 2017, more than 50% of the global population lives in cities. A number that is growing rapidly, especially in developing nations.

In 2045, the world’s urban population will surpass 6 billion. By then, almost two-thirds of us will be city-dwellers. While this paints cities as massive, perpetual growth markets, it also raises important questions. How can we combat the rise of inequality that often accompanies urban growth? How can we prevent vital city infrastructure from buckling under the load? Urban innovation has never been more necessary, and its importance will only increase in the decades to come.

New technologies for smarter cities

As our cities grow, they will need to become smarter to remain liveable. This creates opportunities for innovators: to design new city technology, to provide essential services like healthcare, logistics and public transportation, and to facilitate social interactions between citizens.

Each city is a complex network of interdependent systems. By optimizing these systems and making them more robust and dependable, innovative companies can have a tremendous positive impact on the urban ecosystems they inhabit. This is not only a unique economic opportunity, but a social and environmental one as well. How organizations work with and within cities can usher in a new age of resource efficiency, well-being and prosperity for generations to come.
