Digital health innovations for an aging world

Our world is aging at an astonishing rate. Over the past century, global life expectancy has risen by more than 30 years. This trend shows no sign of stopping, Already, some 600 million people are over 65 years old. By 2050, this number will almost triple to 1,5 billion. Most of this growth will come from the developing world, where the population over 65 is expected to increase by 250% or more.

Traditionally, the old have looked to the young for care and support in old age. As our population ages, however, we will need new solutions. Digital health innovations and advances in robotics will lead to radical improvements in self-management, while artificial intelligence and personal data analytics will usher in an era of tailor-made treatments and revolutionize our quality of life.

Visionary innovations in mental health

Modern society also faces unique challenges in mental wellbeing. We are rapidly approaching a time when the costs of psychological and neurological disorders will outstrip those of physical ailments.  It is estimated that one in four people will face mental health issues in their lifetimes. This number will only grow in coming years. Depressive disorders already rank 4th place in the global disease burden. They may claim 2nd place as early as 2020, according to reports from the World Health Organization.

Clearly, there is an urgent need for innovation in mental health services. Innovators must focus their compassion and inspiration on the growing hurdles in this field, creating new business models and innovative mental health treatments that will keep our minds as healthy as our bodies.
