Global food production faces epic challenges. The world’s population is projected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, yet more than one billion people already suffer from malnutrition. Obesity affects another billion. Meanwhile, a third of our food is wasted.

The importance of innovative food technologies

Humanity has a voracious appetite. Every minute, we consume more than five million kilograms of food. To put that into perspective, imagine a parking lot with 3.250 mid-sized cars. Their combined weight in food would only feed the world for 60 seconds, and then only barely – roughly 12% of our global population is chronically undernourished.

The amount of food our world needs will only increase as our population continues to grow. Meeting these demands and reducing the number of people without sufficient access to food requires radical innovation, both in food production and sustainable agriculture. Identifying promising technologies and scaling them up quickly is one of the most fundamental innovative challenges we face today.

Changing attitudes, reducing waste

Food innovation cannot be limited to technology alone. Transforming public attitudes toward food and health is as important as developing new production paradigms. While 12% of our population is undernourished, another 12% is overweight. Obesity-related diseases are on the rise, straining our healthcare systems. Turning the tide requires a disruption in the way we interact with food.

Eliminating unnecessary food waste is another vital piece of the puzzle. We waste 2,5 kilograms of food for every 5 kilograms we consume, fully one-third of our global production. Every minute, we waste 112 metric tons of fertilizer and 1,7 million tons of water on food that will never feed a soul. The potential of agricultural innovation is staggering, both in terms of cost reduction and the human implications.
