“Our technology inspires people to change their behavioral patterns. This benefits their health”, explains Renato Romani of Easy Way to Health. Originally, he is a doctor, but he is currently working fulltime on his smart scale. “My ultimate goal is to give people with overweight and obese a more fit and healthier life.”

What is Easy Way to Health?
“We developed a scale that focusses on habits and trends in your life instead of hard figures indicating kilos. The algorithm of Easy Way to Health measures and predicts your weight trends.”

The Beginning

What problem are you solving?
“85 percent of the people that start with a program to lose weight, lose their motivation over time because of manifold reasons. An important reason is that the scale can simply indicate that you are heavier, while these fluctuations do not point out that you’ve started living healthier and better. Perhaps you just ate a bit more carbs that day or you experienced less stress. Easy Way to Health maps all these variations and makes improving your health and weight more enjoyable.”

How can I envisage this?
“We make use of an app. To begin with, you’ll step on our scale that has no numbers. In fifty seconds, you’ll have to indicate what clothing you are wearing, after which your weight is measured and sent to the cloud. Do this for three weeks, two or three times per week, and then the scale displays a result such as: ‘You are losing weight’.”

What exactly are you offering with Easy Way to Health?
“We do not offer a program or diet – we merely give tips. When you step on the scale, you’ll receive tips about your health, sports and food. That is what makes it fun, interesting and bearable.”

How did the idea arise?
“In the shower, I was thinking about products that promise to help people and thereupon have a frustrating effect. I came to the conclusion that there is a lot of data available in the medical world that could be used more extensively. After showering, I stepped on my scale and the idea arose. I wanted to do something with all the data that a scale can deliver such as weight, weight fluctuations and the frequency between weightings.”

The Now

How long have you been working on the product?
“It took us two years before we determined the right model, specifications and interactions between the app and the scale. Up to now I primarily talked about the bathroom variant, but we also have a scale for public areas such as fitness centers. At the moment, this one has around 2,000 users worldwide. We are currently focusing on the bathroom scale that can be ordered on our website from this fall onwards.”

How do you collect all the medical data?
“We have a database with scientific articles. We have collected those from within our own network and past.”

The Future

What trends do you see in the market?
“Nowadays, everyone engages in self-management. When people have symptoms, they often look up what it can be on the internet themselves. Because of this, the majority of the world population has a lot more data at their disposal compared to several decennia ago. Easy Way to Health responds to this by lending the algorithm to other smart scales or wearable players.”

What do you expect of your participation in the AIA18?
“I hope to derive a lot of joy from our participation and, besides, the possibility to network and create brand awareness for our product.”

What golden tip do you have for other entrepreneurs?
“Listen to your customers to improve your products and do not give up.”
